An online journal has described yet
another transmission route that is responsible for the current world wide bed bug
infestation. In a recent article, in The Star, a householder posted a video
showing and describing how bed bugs crawled out of a local library book that his
wife had taken home on loan from the public library. The bed bugs, seen in the
video posted online, exited from the murder novel "Watching the Dark," by Peter
Robinson. Presumably they entered the book at the household of the previous
person who borrowed the novel.
The householder's wife took wise action, and after crushing one bug and then sighting a second she sealed up the book and bugs in a plastic zip lock bag for future inspection. By the next morning, three bed bugs had crawled out of the book. Since it only takes one pregnant female bed bug to infest a household, the intrusion of three bugs in a library represented a real threat. Had the alert housewife not seen the bugs, they might have crawled out, mated, and infected the whole home.
The fact that bed bugs can travel from one locale to another inside the pages of a book alerts us to yet another precaution homeowners need to take to stop this epidemic. General warnings about how to prevent a bed bug incursion into the home mention inspection of second hand furniture and clothing that has been in public places. But it is important to note that other second hand objects, such as books, must also be inspected.
