An Internet journal has
described the latest in a number of novel bed bug
transmission pathways. In a recent article by The Star, a householder posted
a video showing and describing how bed bugs crawled out of a local library book
that his wife had taken home on loan from the public library. The bugs were
discovered as they crawled out of the 2012 release "Watching the Dark," by crime
writer Peter Robinson. Presumably they entered the book at the household of the
previous person who read the novel.
The householder's wife took wise action, and after crushing one bug and then sighting a second she placed the book and bugs in a plastic zip lock bag for inspection. Within the next 24 hours three bed bugs Exited from the book. Since it only requires one pregnant female bed bug to infect a household, the intrusion of three bugs in a book posed a truel threat. Had the alert housewife not sighted the bugs, they could have potentially crawled out, mated, and infected the whole home.
The sighting of beg bugs in a book underscores the types of precautions a homeowner must take to prevent these pest from infecting his home. Standard instructions for bed bug prevention include recommendations about careful inspection of any second hand clothing or furniture entering the home. However, this incident underscores the fact that it is just as necesary to inspect other types of second hand objects that have been in the public sector. .
