An
Internet newspaper has described the latest in a number of novel
bed bug
transmission routes. In a recent article by The Star, a homeowner posted a
video in which he tells the story of how bed bugs crawled out of a local library
book that his wife had taken home on loan from the public library. The bed bugs,
seen in the video posted online, crawled out of the murder novel "Watching the
Dark," by Peter Robinson. Most likely they entered the book at the home of the
previous person who read the novel.
The householder's wife took quick
action, and after killing one bug and then sighting a second she sealed up the
book and bugs in a plastic zip lock bag for future inspection. By the next
morning, three bed bugs had crawled out of the book. Three bed bugs is a real
threat because it only takes one pregnant female to infest a whole building. Had
the quick thinking housewife not put the book in a sealed container, the bugs
might have crawled out mated, and subsequently created a colony that could have
spread throughout the whole home. .
The fact that bed bugs can travel
from one locale to another inside the pages of a book reminds us yet another
precaution homeowners need to take to stop this epidemic. Standard instructions
for bed bug prevention include recommendations about careful inspection of any
second hand clothing or furniture entering the home. However, this incident
underscores the fact that it is just as necesary to inspect other types of
second hand objects that have been in the public sector.
